Offshore Tavern & Grill

The Happy Hour Reviewer

The Happy Hour Reviewer For those dedicated drinkers seeking to escape the Garnet Avenue Blues this year, I can recommend Bay Park’s Offshore Tavern & Grill as a reliable bet for a pleasant, no-fuss meal in a beachy-feeling setting. It’s a quick trip out of Pacific Beach: duck under the I-5 and head south for a minute to find their Morena Boulevard location, which opened August 2007.

I hit up Offshore Tavern with a friend on a quiet Tuesday afternoon after the Christmas weekend, choosing a tall table in the main dining room. We ordered the Happy Hour special, $3 homemade sangria that arrived in tall skinny glasses adorned with wine-soaked orange wedges and maraschino cherries. It was smooth and fruity with a light liquor note that our server identified as brandy.

The appetizer menu featured beach-bar standards, including chips and salsa, wings, tenders, shrimp cocktail and cheese quesadilla. We decided to try the Mission Beach nachos, homemade Hummus Dip and $2 a la carte Taco Tuesday special, chicken and fish.

Later in the afternoon, somebody fired up the gas jets in the fireplace, considerably ramping up the bar’s cozy factor. The vibe was relaxed and family-friendly. The four-top next to us included kids in the middle-school-looking age range, and we noticed a couple of arcade games in the corner.

Offshore Tavern & Grill offers a full bar, daily specials and good-sized menu. The Rosarito Style Mac & Cheese, Beer Battered Fish Sandwich, homemade Meatball Sandwich and Caprese Salad all sound good and are decently priced, with the most expensive item on the menu, a full order of baby back ribs, clocking in at $21.95. -The Happy Hour Reviewer
