Prospect Bar & Grill
La Jolla

ProspectBar.com
Nestled atop of downtown La Jolla, Prospect Bar & Grill immediately became a catalyst for my intrigue.
Every detail of this restaurant strives to reflect a bold harmony between upscale dining and beachfront savvy. The outdoor patio is a landscape of crystal-rock fire pits with a view that exposes the true essence of the La Jolla shores.
The menu is American utilitarian, balancing innovation and simplicity; while serving fresh seafood, soulful sliders, creative salads, sandwiches, burgers, hot dogs and south of the boarder favorites. Menu markdowns with local happy hour specials include $3 off appetizers, $10 Burger and a Beer or Margarita (anytime, anyday!), Wing Wednesday’s, Taco Thursdays and many more. The food attracts a crowd of its own, yet the sounds from their nightly live music will keep you wanting more.
Prospect Bar & Grill supports amazing local talent, funky classic bands, and acoustic guitarists that will awaken your enthusiasm for raw talent. Prospect Bar expresses their versatility with nightlife entertainment, fierce cocktails, DJ’s and dancing every night of the week.
$2 off all wine and liquor, and $4 beers can be enjoyed everyday and well into the night. Locals and tourists can now experience the same amenities of a downtown nightclub with Prospect Bar, sans the commotion of the city bustle. This restaurant bar and grill restored my faith in the La Jolla nightlife community. They take happy hour concepts to the highest potential offering specials everyday. This summer, grow accustomed to hearing about their Thursdays nights with FM 94/9 as the place to be. Complete with $.94Dos Equis and $.94 street tacos!
The food, entertainment, specials and service is of remarkable quality, and is evident in every expression of Prospect Bar & Grill.
Rockin’ Baja Coastal Cantina
Old Town, Gaslamp, Oceanside
RockinBaja.com
Rockin’ Baja Coastal Cantina’s roots are inspired by a beach nestled down along the coast of Baja Mexico. The small town of Puerto Nuevo has an extensive reputation as a destination to enjoy delicious lobster and meals in a vibrant, family environment. Inspired by his experiences in Puerto Nuevo Rick Dirienzo opened the original Rockin’ Baja in Bonita, California.
As one would expect, Rockin’ Baja’s atmosphere and ambience is everything a coastal cantina should be. Walking into the Cantina is like being at a beach resort bar while on vacation. The restaurant is a picture into paradise with palapa like straw hanging throughout the restaurant and colorful walls. Comical quotes decorate the walls of the restaurant providing insight into the life of an easy going coastal resident; which are also great for any hiccup in conversation or a transition in a stale one.
There isn’t a better time to experience a new restaurant, but during happy hour. It obviously gives you a chance to sample their food and drinks without paying full price. Typically, I stick to drinking and eating whatever is on special, but I decided to splurge on the food this time around. After drinking a few of their house margaritas (only $4 during happy hour) I had to give one of their famous Baja Buckets a try! It was a tough decision on which one I was going to order as they have eight different options. I ended up going with the Original Baja Bucket that comes overflowing to your table with Baja style slipper lobster tails and shrimp along with grilled carne asada and chicken. It also came with a side of beans, rice and tortillas; definitely enough to feed your table! My amigo had the “Dirty” tacos, a spin on the classic carnitas, which is crispy carnitas mixed with smoky chipotle, cheese, beans, avocado and grilled onions.
My advice to the next person is split a Baja Bucket (average around $20) with your friend and order a couple of their specialty drinks or beers off the happy hour menu. You’ll leave here with a full stomach and definitely feeling good!
So, next time you feel like living out a Jimmy Buffet song, make it a point and visit one of Rockin’ Baja Coastal Cantina’s three locations. Happy Hour is Monday thru Friday from 3 to 6pm and daily bar specials everynight from 6pm to Close. Drink Specials $3-$5 and Food Specials $2-$6.
Lolita’s at the Park
East Village

LolitasMexicanFood.com
The birthplace of the California Burrito! Since 1984 Lolita’s Taco Shop has been dominating the Mexican food scene in the South Bay, serving nothing but authentic Mexican cuisine. Lolita’s at the Park is their newest location located in the East Village, a stone’s throw away from PETCO Park on the corner of Park Blvd. and 10th Ave. The line is out the door for lunch and has quickly become a favorite of many Padres players.
“Adrian eats a Chile Relleno every home game here,” says Juan (Lolita’s bartender), about Padres All-Star Adrian Gonzales.
The East Village location is not your ordinary taco shop; it’s complete with flat screen TVs, modern design and a bar! Even though it has an upscale décor and prime downtown location, Lolita’s still manages to keep their prices low.
I stopped in before a Padres home game and ordered the Carne Asada Fries. Geez, is this thing huge! Too bad I wasn’t going home afterwards because it could have been lunch for the next couple days. Lolita’s doesn’t skimp on anything either. The fries are crispy and are smothered with tender, marinated carne asada, cheese, guacamole and sour cream. I am somewhat a Carne Asada Fries connoisseur and these fries were the best I have ever tried! Also, they don’t give you the hot sauce in the little plastic cups like majority of the other taco shops do; Lolita’s hands you a squeeze-it bottle, oh yeah...time to get busy! Wash that down with a couple cold $2 Miller drafts and you’re one happy camper. Capped off by a Padres victory meant Lolita’s at the Park is going to be part of my new home game ritual.
Happy Hour is about all the time; Monday thru Saturday from 4pm to Close and Sunday 2pm to Close with $10 Pitchers, $2 Miller Drafts, $2-off All Other Beers, $2-off Carne Asada Chips or Fries, $6 Carne Asada Burrito & 12oz Bud Light, and $6.75 for 3 Mini Tacos & Dos Equis Pint. Lastly, don’t forget about their daily $6.20 Lunch Specials.
