Stone Brewing Co. Escondido, CA

San Diego CA

Warning: This beer is aggressive and bold; definitely not intended to please the typical “yellow fizzy beer drinker”.

Stone Brewing Co. sold its first keg in 1996 and sold a mere 12,400 gallons that same year, and doing without a multi-million dollar advertising campaign aimed at pleasing everyone, Stone Brewing Co. sold over 3.1 million gallons of their delicious craft beer in 2009.

Obviously, these guys are doing it right! If you enjoy real craft beer, venture up the I-15 to Escondido and experience the beer first-hand at their spectacular Stone Brewery. If you have some great excuse of not being able to get up there, you can enjoy any Stone brew at the TapRoom in Pacific Beach.

STONE PALE ALE
A.B.V. 5.4%
The flagship ale, Stone Pale Ale is the Southern California interpretation of the classic British pale ale style. Deep amber in color, Stone Pale Ale is robust and full flavored. A delicate hop aroma is complemented by a rich maltiness. This is an ale for those who have learned to appreciate distinctive flavor. Stone Pale Ale is great by itself, or with food that requires a beer of character.

First Release Date: July 1996
Hop Variety: Columbus, Abtanum
BeerAdvocate Rating: B+

STONE SMOKED PORTER
A.B.V. 5.9%
So you think you don’t like dark beer? Prepare to believe. This is no ordinary porter. And if you are already among the enlightened who appreciate a fine ebony-hued ale, we think you will find Stone Smoked Porter to be a poignant addition to your repertoire. This beer pours a gorgeous deep mahogany crowned by a creamy head. Dark, smooth, and complex, with rich chocolate and coffee flavors balanced by a subtle smokiness, this brew is equally delicious with meats or fine chocolates.

First Release Date: December 1996
Hop Variety: Columbus, Mt. Hood

STONE IPA
A.B.V. 6.9%
An “India Pale Ale” by definition is highly hopped and high in alcohol – you’ll find the Stone India Pale Ale to be true to style with a huge hop aroma, flavor and bitterness throughout. If you’re a hop head, they you’ll love the Stone IPA! Medium malt character with a heavy dose of over the top hops! Generous “dry hopping” gives this beer its abundant hop aroma and crisp hop flavor.

First Release Date: August 1997
Hop Variety: 6.9%
BeerAdvocate Rating: A-

STONE RUINATION IPA
A.B.V.  7.7%
So called because of the “ruinous” effect on your palate! This massive hop monster has a wonderfully delicious and intensely bitter flavor on a refreshing malt base. One taste and you can easily see why they call this brew “a liquid poem to the glory of the hop!” Those who seek, crave and rejoice in beers with big, bold, bitter character will find true nirvana in Stone Ruination IPA!

STONE LEVITATION ALE
A.B.V. 4.4%
It’s been said that “Gravity Sucks.” Simple enough. Well, Stone has identified gravitational forces in the beer world. And they have come to the conclusion that they, well, see above. So they avoid these less-than-desirable gravitational forces. They avoid dumbed-down flavor profiles and the vigorous pursuit of the lowest common denominator. They avoid additives, cheap adjuncts, stabalizers and chemical preservatives. So in the defiance of gravity you get Stone Levitation Ale. This deep amber ale has rich malt flavors, a big hoppy character, citrus overtones (courtesy of the hops and the special brewers yeast) and modest alcohol.

First Release Date: September 2002
Hop Variety: Columbus, Amarillo, Simcoe and Crystal, Dry-hopped Amarillo
BeerAdvocate Rating: B+
Availability: Year-round

ARROGANT BASTARD ALE
A.B.V. 7.2%

This is an aggressive beer. You probably won’t like it. It is quite doubtful that you have the taste or sophistication to be able to appreciate an ale of this quality and depth. We suggest that you stick to safer and more familiar territory – maybe something with a multi-million dollar ad campaign aimed at convincing you it’s made in a little brewery, or one that implies that their tasteless fizzy yellow beer will give you more sex appeal. Perhaps you think multi-million dollar ad campaigns make a beer taste better. Perhaps you’re mouthing your words as you read this.

First Release Date: November 1997
Hop Variety: Classified
BeerAdvocate Rating: A-
Availability: Year-round

STONE IMPERIAL RUSSIAN STOUT
A.B.V. 10.5%

Brewed in the authentic historical style of an Imperial Russian Stout, this beer is massive. Intensely aromatic (notes of anise, black currants, coffee, roastiness and alcohol) and heavy on the palate, this brew goes where few can – and fewer dare even try. The style originated from Czarist Russia’s demand for ever thicker English stouts. Expect their version of this mysterious brew to pour like Siberian crude and taste even heavier!

First Release Date: July 2000
Hop Variety: Warrior
BeerAdvocate Rating: A
Availability: Early Summer
