Tavern At The Beach
When was the last time you were at The Tavern at the Beach in Pacific Beach?
Ask yourself this question, when was the last time you were at The Tavern at the Beach in Pacific Beach? I recently hit up their Happy Hour on Tuesday, and noticed an immediate difference in the bar layout itself. The newly remodeled Tavern now has a back bar which hugs the wall creating a lot more room for "getting down" on their busy weekend nights. The back bar is where you might also find San Diego Chargers, Kassim Osgood and others hanging out, buying Bud Lights by the case. I rolled in about 5, which I like to call being late, because the Tavern's Happy Hour starts at noon during the week! They have drink specials from noon until 7pm, unless you are there on a Friday where Bar Manager Larry leaked to me that they have an "extended" Happy Hour until 9pm called the "Panic Hour". During "Panic Hour" their infamous Monday Night special is brought back (A shot and A beer for $5). That just calls for T-Pain on the Jukebox on repeat, "Buy You a Drank", are you kidding?!?!
Packed with a variety of regulars I found myself amongst sitting at the bar, I took a liking to the friendly service that the bartender Carrie provided. Being a bartender locally for 7 years myself, sometimes good service is hard to find, and at the Tavern they're bartenders are easy on the eyes as well...rare. I asked what the best part of their Happy Hour was and Carrie let me know that it was all about their drink specials. Monday through Friday it is $3 well drinks, beer (draft and bottled), and wine by the glass. This is well rounded Happy Hour, all the bases are covered. If you care for a whiskey sour, or a Blue Moon on draft or a glass of Chardonnay, pick your poison, the Tavern's got it for $3. Whatever is your choice of drink for that day, the music videos playing on the TV's mixed in with sports, become "sing-a-longable" too!! I caught myself singing to Naughty By Nature's "O.P.P" uncontrollably. Whoops.
So after making friends with other patrons and the staff, I asked Carrie to make me a shot and she blasted me with Larry's "Purple Shot". It tasted like grape Kool-Aid, and grape Kool-Aid is the pinnacle of Kool-Aid flavors, right?!?!!! Don't try to get the recipe because Larry (The Bar Manager) has got his invention on lock. Great service, fun atmosphere, friendly people is what you can expect when you are at the Tavern at the Beach off of Garnet Avenue in PB.
During my stay at the bar, I saw numerous people walk through the door, peep the scene, then proceed to grab a seat. That is a good sign. If you're at a bar and people walk in and directly out, that means its whack. The Tavern's Happy Hour draws a crowd ranging from young business professionals getting off of work from their 9-5, to your retired "Uncle Eddy" and his old school homey's, all the way to the 21 year old amateur party-goer. Which is not a bad combination, everyone is welcome to have a good time without the awkward setting and average prices. The Tavern is a heritage bar, knowing what we want as a customer and understanding our value. When you get a chance, cruise by the Tavern and watch a couple music videos, listen to good music, flirt with the hottie bartenders, make friends with "Uncle Eddie", exchange business cards with the SDSU alumni co-workers, shoot a game of pool with a local, and buy the person to your right a "purple shot"...you won't be disappointed. Close your tab before you leave, and make sure to tip your Bartender well, because you know you're coming back soon!
p.s.: Don't forget about the Inauguration Party they're throwing when Obama takes office, watch it with your friends at the Tavern if you choose. p.s.s.: Just because you save money by boozing at the Tavern, doesn't mean you should get a "Panic Hour" Tattoo on your forearm...I did and it hurt...not recommended.
